The 2023 Distinguished Artist Awards will be the tenth round of this prestigious award since its launch in 2005. The founders of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation – Tommy Banks, Fil Fraser, John Poole and Jenny Belzberg envisioned a major prize for Alberta artists under the patronage of the Lieutenant Governor.

Funding secured through individual donations and legacies in the early years now supports annual artist award distributions of $100,000. In odd years, up to three Distinguished Artists are awarded $30,000 each, and in even years, up to 10 new Emerging Artists are recognized with a $10,000 award. Profile videos of each artist highlight their creativity and vision and truly showcase ‘Alberta’s abundant arts talent’.

The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards program is one of the most comprehensive in the country, being open to all art forms, including architecture. Since 2005 97 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta artists have been named: 23 Distinguished Artists and 74 Emerging Artists. Every one of these outstanding individuals has had significant impact on our province through their creations and contributions.

Take a look through the individual artist pages and view the related videos – it is an uplifting and heartwarming celebration of Alberta’s visionary artists and rich artistic offerings.

Anyone can nominate an outstanding professional artist for the 2023 Distinguished Artist Award by March 8 2023.

It is hard to overstate the value and importance of recognition as a Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist. This award has lifted our artistic spirit and propelled our work through the affirmation of our peers and our audience, and it has humbled us to be counted among such amazing talent – in this way we are driven to work harder and to reach further, to push the limits of art in Alberta.
