“Hans Olson’s films offer poignant glimpses into the private lives and surroundings of the people he follows in an understated, humble and thoughtful way.”
– Emerging Artist adjudicators
Hans Olson has a passion for both documentary and narrative filmmaking. In all cases, a love of cinematic observation is his guiding light.
In 2015, Hans completed his first feature film, Figurine (nominated for two AMPIA awards). Figurine was a natural extension of his 2012 National Film Board documentary, The Auctioneer (Hot Docs, Documentary Channel), which strove to use the visual language of a quiet drama. In all of his narrative films, Hans has been drawn to work with first-time actors in lead roles. His short dramas include Champagne (TIFF, Vladivostock, CBC Reflections), Baby Boots, and Bronwen’s Ark.
Hans studied screenwriting at Langara College and was a Directors’ Lab resident at the Canadian Film Centre in 2009. He has represented Alberta at film festival Talent Labs in Reykjavik (2014) and Berlin (2016).
