Phil Ponting distinguished himself as a lawyer, but across Alberta’s arts community he was better known as a passionate and dedicated leader who gave generously of his time and expertise.
Phil was a Member of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation from its inception and served as a Board Director before taking on the role of Board Chair from 2012-2017.
He remained connected to the Foundation as a contributing Member to our Annual General Meetings and a keen attendee at our awards events. In fact, he became keeper of the Foundation’s institutional memory as the only individual to attend each of its 11 Distinguished Artist Awards from 2005 -2025. He took great pride in the work of the Foundation and of the outstanding artists it celebrates.
Phil is also remembered for his extraordinary leadership contributions to the Edmonton Symphony Society; the Edmonton Concert Hall Foundation and the Francis Winspear Centre for Music; The Banff Centre; the Canada Council for the Arts and numerous other arts organizations.
He will be dearly missed.
