Since 2008, the Emerging Artist competition, which runs every other year, has awarded a total of $250,000 to 25 artists at the beginning stages of their professional careers. Artists apply for the honour by highlighting their artistic achievements and making a case for how the $10,000 award will help them take their career to the next level. Each application must be supported with confidential appraisals from two experts in their artistic discipline who can speak to the applicant’s work and potential.
Applications are adjudicated by an independent panel in a process managed by The Banff Centre, and selected by The Board of Directors of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation.
Recipients receive their cash awards and the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award medal from the awards honorary patron, His Honour, Col. (Ret’d) the Honourable Donald S. Ethell, OC OMM AOE MSC CD LLD, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, in a private ceremony at Government House in Edmonton.
