Tayte Mitchell

2026

“Tayte is an emerging artist in the field of opera who is literally doing it all. He has worked his way up into a position of artistic responsibility and influence at major national opera companies. At the same time, he has ensured that he can develop and grow as an artist in ways he defines by founding and leading his own Calgary-based opera company, Ammolite Opera. Tayte is an emerging leader in Canada’s national opera milieu.”

Tayte Mitchell lists stage director, producer, and lyric tenor among his artistic practices. This mix aptly demonstrates his conviction that artists have a responsibility to foster artistic opportunities in their communities. As the Founding CEO and Artistic Director of Ammolite Opera, Tayte has directed and produced several new operas over Ammolite Opera’s first two seasons. In 2024, Ammolite Opera made history as the first contemporary opera company to win a Betty Mitchell Award, alongside nominations for Outstanding Musical Direction and Outstanding Production of a Musical. Under his leadership, Tayte has directed and produced new operas such as Rene Orth and Mark Campbell’s Empty the House, Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek’s Proving Up, as well as Gareth Williams and Anna Chatterton’s Rocking Horse Winner.

Other directing credits in 2026 include Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia (Burnaby Lyric Opera) and Dean Burry’s The Bremen Town Musicians (Vancouver Opera). In the 2026/27 season, at the invitation of legendary director and playwright Morris Panych, Tayte will make his Associate Director debut at Vancouver Opera for their production of Il barbiere di Siviglia.

An accomplished tenor, Tayte is an alumnus of the Calgary Opera McPhee Young Artist Program. He trained at Marilyn Horne’s Music Academy of the West, Wolf Trap Opera, and the Brott Opera Festival. He holds a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory and a Master of Music from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Beyond assisting on professional productions, directing his own productions, or acting as a performer himself, Tayte has invested significant energy in supporting opera and the arts at the local level. He has helped foster access, continuity, and care in a field that depends on collaboration and trust. This combination of big-picture thinking and attention to detail is rare and deeply valuable.
