2013 Distinguished Artist Recipients Named

Calgary, AB–It’s a Calgary sweep for the 2013 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards.

Writer Aritha van Herk will receive the award as an individual artist with the second award shared by the founders of the Old Trout Puppet Workshop: Judd Palmer, Pityu Kenderes and Peter Balkwill.

Award patron, His Honour, Colonel (Retired) the Honourable Donald S. Ethell, OC OMM AOE MSC CD LLD, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta will present the hand-cast medals and two $30,000 awards at a gala dinner in Red Deer June 15, 2013. Recipients also receive a two-week Leighton Artist Colony residency at The Banff Centre.

Adjudicators described Aritha van Herk as “a profound and inventive writer,” who is both internationally and nationally respected and acclaimed for her highly original contribution to Canadian literature.

The adjudicators described Palmer, Kenderes and Balkwill—“the Old Trouts”—as celebrated on world stages “and recognized as one of the foremost innovators in puppetry.”

The 2013 recipients join seven individual artists, a duo, and one other collective who have received the honour since 2005.
