Michael Hingston is a freelance journalist and author. From 2012 to 2016 he wrote the books column for the Edmonton Journal, and his work has also appeared in Wired, the Guardian, The Walrus, The Globe and Mail, the National Post, The Daily Beast, Salon, Atlas Obscura, the South China Morning Post, and Alberta Venture. He has been called “one of the sharpest young literary critics in this country” by 49th Shelf.
His first novel, The Dilettantes, set in the offices of a struggling student newspaper, was a #1 regional bestseller and received a starred review in Quill & Quire; the Winnipeg Free Press said it “may well be the Great Canadian Comic Novel.” It was later translated into German.
Hingston is also the editor and co-publisher of the Short Story Advent Calendar, a collection of 24 individually bound stories, from writers across the continent, that get opened on the mornings leading up to Christmas. In 2015, the inaugural edition of the calendar sold out after just six weeks; a new calendar for 2016 is currently in production.
