Jennifer Quist

2014

“Her writing is extraordinarily strong, powerfully handled, and evidence of a rarely encountered original voice.”

– Emerging Artist adjudicators

Jennifer describes herself as “a writer, talker, boy-raiser, and author of Love letters of the Angels of Death.” Her debut novel received favourable reviews in the National Post, Quill and Quire, Edmonton Journal, and Montreal Review of Books . It was noted in the Toronto Star, the Literary Press Group’s First Fiction Friday, and in Open Book Toronto. In November, 2013, it was listed number five on the Edmonton Journal’s bestseller list.

The “boy-raiser” part of her has raised five boys, the last about to enter school, giving Jennifer some much-anticipated writing time. Jennifer has written and voiced introspective personal essays for CBC’s Definitely Not the Opera and Tapestry and has published in anthologies and literary journals, as well as publishing commentaries in the Globe and Mail, National Post, and Taber Times. Her essays have appeared in such magazines as Maclean’s, Today’s Parent, and Alberta Oil.

One of Jennifer’s pieces appears in a college-level textbook as an example of a blended essay, “the risky, do-not-try-this-at-home essay form,” she says. “It was the fulfillment of my high school yearbook ‘future ambition’ to have students forced to read my stuff.”

Jennifer is already at work on her second novel.
