“most fertile imagination, pushing painting into sculpture, utterly unique.”
– Emerging Artist adjudicators
Chris Miller aims to create a form of storytelling, “that expands on the traditions of painting, sculpture, and comic books by weaving the humorous and narrative possibilities with fanatical accumulation.”
The adjudicators credit him with a “most fertile imagination, pushing painting into sculpture, utterly unique.”
Millar was born in Claresholm and currently lives and works in Calgary. He earned a Fine Arts Diploma at what is now MacEwan University in 1998 and a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2000.
Millar first appeared on the Canadian art scene in the 2005 Alberta Biennial, collaboration between the Edmonton Art Gallery and the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre for the Arts. His work Bejeweled Doubled Festooned Plus Skull for Girls was included in the 2010 Biennial and recently acquired by the National Gallery of Canada.
Millar’s work was short-listed for both the 2005 and 2007 RBC Painting Competitions. Most recently his work is included at oh Canada, an exhibition of contemporary Canadian art at the MASSMoCa in North Adams, Massachusetts.
